‘Ultra Violet’ is Pantone’s Color of the Year 2018

The color represents a symbol of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance, according to Pantone.

Pantone has selected “Ultra Violet” as its Color of the Year 2018. Pantone describes the blue-based purple color as communicating originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking.

Historically, the color has a mystical or spiritual quality attached to it, which means it is often associated with mindfulness practices. Purple-toned lighting has been used in meditation spaces and other gathering areas to energize the community and inspire collaboration.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, in a release.

Previous Colors of the Year include “Greenery” in 2017, “Rose Quartz” and “Serenity” in 2016, and “Marsala” in 2015.
