When the $63 million First Street Building at the Saint Mary's/Duluth Clinic in Duluth, Minn., earned LEED Gold last month, it arguably became the greenest healthcare facility in the nation—or at least the largest. At 236,000-sf, the clinic, which houses a cancer center, breast diagnostic center, and pediatric care center, is the biggest LEED-rated healthcare facility in the U.S.

Green features include systems that achieve a 25% reduction in energy and a 30% reduction in water; low-VOC paints, varnishes, sealers, adhesives, and flooring; and FSC-certified wood products.

Architect HKS, Dallas, and construction manager M. A. Mortenson, Minneapolis, led the Building Team.
