Landini Associates has announced the debut of its design for ALDI Corner Store, an art-infused, small-format retail model that embraces fresh food, local artist collaborations, and an elevated customer experience.

The goal of the new design is to interpret the traditional ALDI model into a new format for urban settings that is genuinely local. ALDI Corner Store’s layout is driven by the need to refurbish existing buildings instead of constructing new properties.

Grocery and fresh produce are still the main offering in the store, but are supplemented by a growing range of ready to go meals and convenience-based products. A new take-away coffee and artisanal bakery offering is also included. “The new Corner Store layout is aligned to the needs of a local, largely walk-in customer base, with simple navigation, self-checkouts, fresh offerings, quality products and everyday low prices with a nostalgic neighborhood feel,” said Huw Longman, Director of the ALDI Corner Store Project, in a release.

Each ALDI Corner Store will be designed to celebrate its local community through strategic local art partnerships. Local artists will create artworks that celebrate each store’s surrounding neighborhood as well as ALDI’s food proposition of high quality at low prices. The stores will feature a palette of sustainable materials including pale brick, white tiles, clockwork, terrazzo, black steel and galvanized steel mesh, timber palettes, oak, and walnut.

“We wanted to create a solution that is both a design signature and memorably ALDI but also something truly different,” said Mark Landini, Creative Director of Landini Associates, in a release. “We have ensured that each ALDI Corner Store will be recognizable and distinct, both in the design parameters and in this first store by commissioning a unique artwork”

The debut ALDI Corner Store is set to open at 99 Mount Street in North Sydney, a business zone not far from Sydney Harbor.

Mixed-Use on Steroids

Mixed-use development has been one of the few bright spots in real estate in the last few years.
