The University of Kentucky’s Rupp Arena and the nearby Lexington Center will undergo a major renovation beginning next year. Plans for the arena include private suites, a new center-hung scoreboard, chair-back seats throughout the arena, an expanded concourse, and a new hospitality level. The overall seat count will remain at 23,500. The Lexington Center project will add about 100,000 sf, doubling space for exhibitions, and adding a new ballroom and meeting rooms.
The first phase of the projects is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2014. Once the arena project is underway, a construction schedule will allow the Wildcats to play basketball at Rupp during renovations. NBBJ will lead the design team and Hunt Construction Group will be the lead contractor.The total project cost is expected to be about $300 million.
