Tom Wujec, lead facilitator of BD+C's 3rd Annual Under 40 Leadership Summit, October 9-11 in San Francisco, outlines the Vision U40 competition, which will launch at the Summit.
Participants will collaborate in small teams to develop innovative solutions to today's pressing social, economic, technical and cultural problems related to the built environment, and complete for $5,000 in prizes.

"How do become stronger as an AEC leader?
In this year's U40 Leadership Summit, you'll have the opportunity to exercise your creative muscles by developing innovative solutions to some of the grand challenges facing the world today.
This year's Summit will take the form of a competition—a collaborative contact sport that will give you the opportunity to think deeply about the impact of great design, engineering, and construction. Working in small groups with your peers, you'll pick a pressing issue from one of eight areas, and together you'll brainstorm, develop elegant concepts, and pitch a solution—large or small—that effectively addresses the challenge.
Four teams will win $500 each, and the best pitch wins the $3,000 cash prize and eternal admiration of your colleagues. Along the way you'll have a chance to network with other leaders across the entire AEC spectrum.

LOT-EK, Beyer Blinder Belle, and West 8 have been selected as the design team for Hudson River Park’s Pier 57 at 15th Street and the Hudson River as part of the development group led by New York-based real estate developer YoungWoo & Associates. The 375,000 square foot vacant, former passenger ship terminal will be transformed into a cultural center, small business incubator, and public park, including a rooftop venue for the Tribeca Film Festival.

AGC: Construction employment declines in 47 states in July
Few states were immune from construction employment declines this July based on an analysis of federal employment data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. That analysis found that 47 states saw declines in construction employment, while only two states saw increases and one saw no change in construction employment between July 2008 and July 2009.

AGC: Construction unemployment reaches 19.2%
Unemployment in the construction sector climbed to a “horrendous” 19.2 percent (not-seasonally adjusted) as an additional 59,000 construction workers lost their jobs in May according to new federal data, said construction economist Ken Simonson today.

Construction Specifications Institute to end support of MasterFormat 95 on December 31, 2009
The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) announced that the organization will cease to license and support MasterFormat 95 as of December 31, 2009. The CSI Board of Directors voted to stop licensing and supporting MasterFormat 95 during its June 16, 2009, meeting at the CSI Annual Convention in Indianapolis.

Gensler among eight teams named finalists in 'classroom of the future' design competition
Eight teams were recognized today as finalists of the 2009 Open Architecture Challenge: Classroom. Finalists submitted designs ranging from an outdoor classroom for children in inner-city Chicago, learning spaces for the children of salt pan workers in India, safe spaces for youth in Bogota, Colombia and a bamboo classroom in the Himalayan mountains.
