Japan to transform canal into world's largest outdoor pool

Japan to transform canal into world's largest outdoor pool

Project part of multi-year revitalization of canal district

By BD+C Staff | May 31, 2013

Inhabitat's Lori Zimmer profiles a wild proposal by the city of Osaka, Japan, that would transform the Dotonbori Canal into a 2,625-foot-long, 40-foot-wide pool—creating the largest outdoor pool in the world. Once constructed, the pool would be pumped with millions of gallons of purified city water.

Due to be completed in 2015, the pool will be located in the Shinsaibashi district, which is known for its vibrant nightlife. The proposal is part of a multi-year revitalization effort by the city to turn the area into an entertainment destination, with a boardwalk lined with cafes, bars, retail shops, and restaurants.

The city plans to charge admission for use of the pool ($10-15), which will be open June through September.
