EPA, retail leaders to create sustainability website

August 11, 2010

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) and the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) announced plans recently to launch a retail specific Web portal that will streamline information gathering on environmental sustainability and compliance issues. The Web portal is set to launch late this year.

RILA, along with other retail industry representatives, have been collaborating with the EPA over several months to create this ground-breaking Web portal.

“Sustainability is a key issue and a top concern for RILA and our member companies. This portal will serve as a clearing-house for information to further advance the industry’s efforts to apply sustainable practices,” said Senior Vice President for Retail Operations, Casey Chroust.

The Web portal will centralize information regarding environmental compliance, sustainability and pollution prevention practices applicable to the retail sector. The Web portal will provide easy access to all retail-related environmental compliance information within the EPA’s Web site.

“The EPA provides a wealth of environmental compliance and sustainability information related to the retail sector;  we’re pleased to be working with the retail sector to make this information easily accessible through a single Web portal,” said EPA’s Compliance Assistance and Sector Programs Division Director, Jim Edward.

The industry-specific Web portal is the product of ongoing dialogue between the EPA and its retail partners, most notably among the members of the RILA Sustainability Initiative (RSI).

Launched last year, the RILA Sustainability Initiative (RSI) is a collaborative initiative designed to aid leading retail companies pursue environmentally sustainable activities and business practices, as well as meet environmental standards. RSI membership is open to both RILA members and non-RILA members. RILA and RSI will be the EPA’s primary resource and sounding board for developing the Web portal.
