A shopping mall in the Philippines installed a 2.9 megawatt PV plant on its rooftop. Inhabitat reports that the Robinsons Starmills mall in San Fernando has the world’s largest commercial rooftop solar array.
This mall is part of a larger countrywide project. In addition to Robinsons Starmills, property developer Robinsons Land is placing PV panels on the roofs of five other malls this spring. The developer installed solar plants on two mall properties in 2015, and will launch two other projects by the end of this year.
According to the developer, the 10 malls combined will generate 12.5 MW of power. Also, Robinsons Land says the campaign will generate 15.94 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy per year, the equivalent of saving 8,760 tons of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels and planting 223,965 fully grown trees. The energy generated will account for 30% of the 10 malls’ electricity requirements.
Robinsons Land says the goal is to eventually install PV panels at all 41 of its malls.
