As part of its hosting duties for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar is building eight new stadiums across the country. Recently, the design of the eighth and largest stadium, Lusail Stadium, was unveiled by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) just north of the host city of Doha.

The Foster + Partners-designed stadium features a golden bowl structure and apertures shaped like “fanar” lanterns. The stadium, which is meant as a celebration of the Middle East’s ancient tradition of craftsmanship, has the ability to hold 80,000 fans.

Organizers have proposed the venue host opening round matches and final matches. Lusail Stadium is situated at the heart of Lusail, a planned city on the coast in the northern part of the municipality of Al Daayen. Once the 2022 World Cup is over, Lusail Stadium will become the heart of the brand new community.

The stadium is currently under construction with internal works having commenced in the west stand. Stadium construction is slated for completion in 2020.
