When it came to transforming Gund Hall, the concrete modernist building that has housed Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, advanced vacuum insulating glass (VIG), solar control low-E coatings, and close design-assist collaboration helped improve the comfort, energy performance, and daylighting while preserving the architectural character. As part of a comprehensive enclosure renewal because the building struggled with air and water infiltration, excessive glare, and poor thermal performance, the results with the Vitro glass solutions are projected to reduce Gund Hall’s energy use intensity by 22.2% and utility costs by 19.1%, while substantially improving comfort and daylighting quality throughout the studios. The use of Vitro VacuMax VIG on the north and south elevations—a hybrid VIG assembly to meet stretch code requirements for the state of Massachusetts—allowed the team to establish and meet performance targets for each orientation. Through a combination of many Vitro glass products, including Solarban R100 glass Solargray glass lites and Solarban 90 Acuity glass, between 79–80% of heat from the sun is prevented from entering the north and east curtain walls, while 48% of visible light is ushered inside.

When the Williamsville-Sherman Community Unit School District No. 15 completed a recent expansion to add fifth and sixth grades to the existing junior high facility, a goal was to ensure the school maintained a single identity across its varied facilities, which was achieved using PAC-CLAD 7.2 Perforated Corrugated panels. Incorporating the educational philosophy to combine middle or junior highs on the same campus as the high schools they feed into but with separate entrances and other physical boundaries, this school also recognizes the separate junior and senior athletic programs who share the same purple and yellow colors. These colors are incorporated as part of a campus-wide identity program and appear in abstracted stripes over glass curtainwall windows at the building’s corners. This look was achieved using the 7.2 Perforated Corrugated panels specified in a Stone White finish, then painted with the bright school colors which provides a contrast to the neutral concrete and masonry materials that dominate the building’s façade. The panels of large, perforated screens of corrugated aluminum are available in a nearly endless combination of hole sizes, spacing, and open-space percentages to complement a project’s need.
