Smart building systems key to new Wisconsin general aviation terminal’s net zero target

The Outagamie County Regional Airport’s new 8,000 sf general aviation terminal was designed to achieve net zero. Located in Appleton, Wis., the structure incorporates high efficiency systems such as radiant floor heating,a 50kW photovoltaic system on the terminal roof, a 12-panel solar heating system on the terminal that provides almost 100% of the domestic hot water supply.

The Outagamie County Regional Airport’s new 8,000 sf general aviation terminal was designed to achieve net zero. Located in Appleton, Wis., the structure incorporates high efficiency systems such as radiant floor heating,a 50kW photovoltaic system on the terminal roof, a 12-panel solar heating system on the terminal that provides almost 100% of the domestic hot water supply.

HVAC features were tied heavily with smart building automation systems, so that if a window is open, the air conditioning system will not turn on. Similarly, LED lights do not turn on when daylighting is sufficient. “We fully intend to have a net-zero impact from an environmental standpoint, that is — we will not have a carbon footprint, and any environmental impact we do have will be offset by measures of sustainability present throughout the organization,” says an airport spokesman. The terminal and a new 12,000 sf hangar cost $5.5 million to construct.
