The airport in Redmond, Ore., is undergoing a $180 million expansion project that will add more than 80,000 sf to one end of the existing terminal. The initiative marks the first expansion of Central Oregon’s primary airport since 2008.

The number of passengers at Redmond Municipal Airport has more than doubled in the past decade. To meet the rising demand for travel through Central Oregon, the project will double the airport’s capacity.

The project, which uses mass timber in the roof and ceiling structure, topped out in July, with a glulam beam provided by TimberLab.

Constructed by Skanska, the project includes a new second-level concourse with seven boarding bridges, large holdrooms, more seating, and over 6,000 sf of new concessions. 

The design by Hennebery Eddy Architects and RS&H responds to the region’s landscape and character. A full curtain-wall envelope takes advantage of the airport’s location in the high desert, with expansive windows offering views of the Cascade Range, volcanic outcroppings, and sagebrush and juniper plains. The project’s daylighting strategy balances natural light with glare control and thermal comfort. 

On the exterior, the solar shade fins create a Cascade mountain motif while also mitigating the challenges of extensive glass. Along with the fins and standard gate backwalls, perforated solar screens protect the agent workstations from intense sunlight.

The floor terrazzo features a geographic pattern of the Deschutes River, with color variations representing the water’s depth and flow.

The project’s adaptable, streamlined layout allows for easy future build-out. The airport served 1.2 million passengers in 2024 and expects to serve more than 1.7 million by 2036, according to The Bulletin.

Construction is anticipated to reach completion in early 2028.
