Dempsey Construction Inc., San Diego, has acquired Legacy Building Services Inc., a general contractor also from San Diego. The acquisition creates a diversified organization that will serve the commercial development, biotech/laboratory, multifamily, retail, education, historic renovation, theme park and healthcare sectors.

Prior to founding Dempsey Construction in 2010, Dempsey was president of Lusardi Construction and helped grow the company to an ENR top 200 general contracting company with over 500 employees and annual revenues in excess of $300 million. The Dempsey Construction team has successfully completed commercial renovation and improvement projects throughout California, Arizona and as far as Indianapolis, including Event Network, California Stem Cell, Innovative Dialysis, Emerald Connect, California Center for Sustainable Energy, The Country Montessori School, HAV Capital and Mitchell International.
Since 2003, Legacy Building Services has been responsible for some of the most prestigious construction projects in San Diego. The company has completed high profile projects in education including the Miramar Aviation Technology Building, Lemon Grove STEM Academy, San Pasqual Academy (including 30 LEED Platinum certifications), Valhalla High School Science Building and the USD Founders Hall. In addition, Legacy has completed numerous cultural attractions including the Polar Bear Plunge, Panda Trek and the new Koala exhibit at the San Diego Zoo, and Turtle Reef at SeaWorld. The firm’s historic renovations include Liberty Station Marketplace; Building 210, Building 19 and the Chapel at the Naval Training Center; and the Old Police Headquarters downtown. Legacy Building Services will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dempsey Construction Inc. and will employ approximately 30 professionals.

Manhattan's Pier 57 to be transformed into cultural center, small business incubator, and public park as part of $210 million redevelopment plan

The 375,000 square foot vacant, former passenger ship terminal will be transformed into a cultural center, small business incubator, and public park, including a rooftop venue for the Tribeca Film Festival.

AGC: Construction employment declines in 47 states in July
Few states were immune from construction employment declines this July based on an analysis of federal employment data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. That analysis found that 47 states saw declines in construction employment, while only two states saw increases and one saw no change in construction employment between July 2008 and July 2009.

AGC: Construction unemployment reaches 19.2%
Unemployment in the construction sector climbed to a “horrendous” 19.2 percent (not-seasonally adjusted) as an additional 59,000 construction workers lost their jobs in May according to new federal data, said construction economist Ken Simonson today.

Prism-shaped design unveiled for five-star hotel in Saudi Arabia
Goettsch Partners has been commissioned by Saudi Oger Ltd. to design a new five-star, 214-key business hotel in the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. As a design-build assignment, Saudi Oger is serving as the contractor, selected by developer Rayadah Investment Company. The project is sited on Parcel 1.08, one of the first 10 parcels currently under development in the massive new master-planned district.
