Team win: Clemson University Allen N. Reeves Football Operations Complex

Silver Award: Clemson gets a new football operations palace, thanks to its building partners’ ability to improvise.

By John Caulfied, Senior Editor | June 8, 2017

Clemson University has built an elaborate football operations facility, whose Building Team had to improvise to meet a 15-month construction deadline. Michael Robinson Photography

The Allen N. Reeves Football Complex, which includes 1.5 acres of outdoor space, supports the day-to-day activities of Clemson University's football players, coaches, and staff. It was constructed in 13 months with zero change orders and within South Carolina’s strict cost limitations—a testament to the Building Team’s planning and coordination with owners, staff, and trades.

The Building Team held weekly stakeholder, budget, and BIM coordination meetings over the course of the project’s design and construction. All of the MEP systems were coordinated before anything was installed.

In several instances, the Building Team changed its delivery method to accommodate the budget or compressed scheduling. For example, delays in finalizing the building’s exterior skin pushed releases for its materials several months. To catch up, the procurement process was modified, and design-build and design-assist construction packages were added for several scopes of work.

To mobilize subcontractors before construction began, the Building Team agreed to run deep foundation as design-build. When the project fell behind schedule, critical-path subcontractors agreed to work six days a week, add second shifts, and increase their manpower.

To match Clemson’s programming needs with the project’s budget, DPR incorporated several new scope items, such as breaking up millwork packages and hiring a second subcontractor to take advantage of available savings with a local cabinet builder. That alone saved $150,000.

The completed building includes an outdoor basketball shelter, bowling alley, barbershop, production studio, new lockers, sleeping area for players, state-of-the-art training facilities, hydrotherapy pools for injury recovery, and a 25,000-sf weight-lifting room.
