OneDek® Offers Precision Climate Control at Bee Sweet Citrus Facility

Bee Sweet Citrus, a leading citrus grower, needed a new facility that could manage three distinct climate zones for optimal product quality. By utilizing OneDek^®, they achieved significant improvements in temperature control, efficiency, and energy savings. 

Bee Sweet Citrus faced the challenge of expanding their operations in Northern California. Their new 212,000-square-foot facility required precise temperature and humidity control to ensure product quality and longevity, as well as careful attention to construction schedules, envelope performance, and operational costs. The facility needed to accommodate three climate zones: refrigerated (processing/storage), ambient (shipping/storage), and air-conditioned (office/processing) areas.

The primary challenge was designing a roofing system that could handle the unique climate requirements of the different zones within the facility. Temperature and humidity control were critical to maintaining the quality of the citrus fruits, while also ensuring that the facility met the desired energy and operational efficiency standards. The project team needed to balance performance, speed, and cost-effectiveness while addressing the complexity of the design.

The project team initially considered a traditional low-slope roof assembly but soon realized that a more innovative solution was necessary. After collaborating with Beckenhauer Construction, Inc. and PanelClad, the team opted for OneDek— a state-of-the-art insulated roof deck system.

The OneDek system allowed for a higher R-value per inch of thickness compared to traditional insulation, reducing the need for additional material and installation steps. This feature was especially beneficial in meeting the R-value requirements for the three climate zones in the facility. Moreover, OneDek’s design minimized the number of steps and components needed, which reduced the potential for vapor drive and helped improve humidity control.
