Construction is expected to begin soon on 745 Chapel Street, the largest private development in the history of New Haven, Conn.
Becker + Becker Associates of Faifield, Conn., the architect/developer for the mixed-use project, has named Fusco Corporation of New Haven to serve as construction manager.
The project is located in downtown New Haven on the 1.5-acre, Shartenberg site across from the State Street railroad station. At present, a surface parking lot occupies the site, but by late fall 2007, the tract should be undergoing site work, according to spokesperson Sara Bronin of Becker + Becker.
The $160-million development consists of a 31-story, 420,000-square-foot building with about 470 housing units, an early childhood center, a grocery store, and retail establishments. Approximately 650 parking spaces will provided on three floors — one below grade. About 1,600 union construction jobs and 125 permanent jobs are to be generated by the development. A "sustainable" project, it is being designed and built to Silver certification guidelines of the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
Selected through a competitive public Request For Proposal process to develop the Shartenberg site, Becker + Becker Associates is an architecture, planning, preservation, and development firm established in 1950, while Fusco Corporation is a third-generation, family-owned commercial construction company founded in 1924.
