Grimshaw's 'kit of parts' design scheme selected for Qatar sports facilities program

July 2, 2014

Grimshaw Architects has been selected as the winner of a competition held by The Qatar Olympic Committee to design sports facilities across Qatar.

The series of projects, called the Al Farjan Recreational Sports Facilities, have been designed in such a way that the same basic design can be adapted to the specific requirements of each site, ArchDaily reports.

These "kit of parts" buildings will all have fabric canopies in order to cope with Qatar's harsh desert climate. The canopies will provide shade and note paths to recreation and seating areas.

Each complex's landscape and canopies will be altered to direct cooling winds through the facilities, and will utilize grey water recycling systems to increase landscape irrigation.
