The University of California, Berkeley, in February celebrated the opening and dedication of Sutardja Dai Hall, a 141,000-sf, $138 million facility that serves as the new headquarters for the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and the Banatao Institute@CITRIS Berkeley. The programs are focused on research and development of new technologies to address social, environmental, and healthcare challenges.
Designed by SmithGroup, with San Francisco-based Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction as contractor, the facility features terraces on three different levels to respond to challenging elevation changes of more than 60 feet, while also providing connections to six adjacent engineering buildings. Sutardja Dai Hall includes labs, two 15,000-sf cleanrooms, a cybercafé, distance-learning classrooms, and a technology museum.
