The U.S. Capitol Dome needs extensive restoration work. An RFP has been issued for a contractor to paint and repair the Dome's cast iron structure, abate existing lead, rehabilitate the Dome's interstitial space, and install Dome tour route lighting and rotunda lighting, among other tasks. It could cost more than $10 million to complete the work, but Congress has not yet allocated funding.

The Architect of the Capitol hopes to start work as soon as this summer. During the restoration, the Dome will be wrapped in scaffolding (covered with a white scrim). The last major Dome restoration took place in 1959 and 1960 when its paint was stripped and the ironwork was primed with a rust inhibitor. Responses are due by March 15.
