Nearly half of hospital administrators plan renovations in 2013, survey says
This year will be a busy one for hospital renovations. Nearly half (47%) of the 125 respondents to a HealthLeaders Media survey say they plan upgrades to existing facilities, while 26% say they have plans for new facilities. Key goals for facility overhauls are upgrading aging buildings, improving business operations, and boosting disaster resiliency.
The recession has created pent-up demand for renovations. “A lot of places are holding off as long as they can, but you get to a place where you just have to move forward,” says Susan Doliner, vice president for development at Maine Medical Center, a 600-bed hospital in Portland. In California, hospitals have until 2030 to meet the state's seismic safety standards, and some are already addressing that issue with renovations.
