Perkins+Will’s renovated Atlanta office is North America’s top LEED Platinum project

Perkins+Will’s new Atlanta officeis the current highest-scoring LEED Platinum project in North America under the 2009 version of LEED -NC. The building, originally constructed in 1985, minimizes energy use by 58% and potable water use by 78%. Exterior renovations included energy efficient exterior glazing, alterations to the front facade, a new 5th floor terrace for meetings and social events, and a garden for employees.

Perkins+Will’s new Atlanta officeis the current highest-scoring LEED Platinum project in North America under the 2009 version of LEED -NC. The building, originally constructed in 1985, minimizes energy use by 58% and potable water use by 78%. Exterior renovations included energy efficient exterior glazing, alterations to the front facade, a new 5th floor terrace for meetings and social events, and a garden for employees.

The structure uses an active, dynamic exterior sunshade on the terrace level to control afternoon sunlight and heat gain. For climate control, the building uses raised flooring and a radiant heating and cooling system, microturbines, and an absorption chiller. The project reused, repurposed, recycled or otherwise diverted 80% (630 tons) of material from the building.

Drew Ballensky is general manager of Duro-Last Roofing, Inc.’s central U.S. facility in Iowa and company spokesman for Duro-Last’s cool roofing, sustainability and architectural education programs. He is past-president of the Chemical Fabrics and Film Association and chairman of CFFA’s Vinyl Roofing Division. Drew earned his bachelor’s degree in industrial technology from the University of Northern Iowa and master’s degree in business administration from Florida State University. Drew has over 29 years experience in business and industry in various engineering and managerial capacities. He has worked in the U.S. and Canadian operations for a major international manufacturer of pre-engineered steel buildings, was a financial analyst with a major athletic apparel manufacturer and was an owner of a general contracting company.
