Funding for the project came from a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, derived from the UK’s national lottery, with support from Yorkshire Forward, a regional development agency, and public donations. A total of 1.6 million pounds was raised for the roof restoration and the creation of a new two-story education center. By asking the public to sponsor Welsh roof slates for 5 pounds each, the project raised 25,000 pounds.
The heritage steam railway, which runs 18 miles from Pickering to Whitby through the scenic North Yorkshire moors, attracts more than 300,000 visitors each year and is believed to contribute 30 million pounds to the local economy annually.
