Solar panel roof tops regional archives center

Aug. 11, 2010

When the GSA was looking for a place to demonstrate renewable energy technology, the Frederick C. Murphy Federal Center in Waltham, Mass., fit the bill. As the northeast headquarters for the National Archives and Records Administration, it was essential that the 144,000-sf center have a leak-proof roof. Roman Piaskoski, GSA-New England's regional energy coordinator, specified Sika Sarnafil's EnergySmart Roof membrane and Solar-Integrated's Building Integrated Photovoltaic roofing system. The system consists of 10x40-foot solar electric roof panels—each with 12 flexible photovoltaic modules—welded to the membrane. The system will save an estimated $67,000 per year in electrical costs.
