Building owners cite BIM/VDC as 'most exciting trend' in facilities management, says Mortenson report

A recent survey of more than 60 building owners and facility management professionals by Mortenson Construction shows that BIM/VDC is top of mind among owner professionals.

Mortenson Construction today released the results of a survey of more than 60 facilities professionals at the Construction Owners Association of America (COAA) 2013 Spring Seminar. Participants included facilities leaders for organizations such as higher education, healthcare, and government.

When asked to identify the most exciting trend in facility management and project delivery today, 42% cited BIM/VDC as their top trend, followed by "technology in general" (25%), integrated project delivery (8%), and energy reduction (8%). The survey group said they see a number of significant benefits from BIM/VDC coordination, including the ability to catch design/construction issues before they occur, efficiency in the design/construction process, and reducing overall project costs.

According to the Mortenson report, while owners are enthusiastic about BIM/VDC, the adoption rate remains low. But that may soon change, the builder wrote, with 69% of respondents indicating that they believe they will utilize BIM/VDC to manage their facilities three years from now, if only on a moderate basis.

Here's a breakout of the survey findings:
