U40 Summit featured speaker: Arthur Gensler on how to build a world-class AEC practice

Gensler will talk about the role of the architect in society, the impact of great design, and the practicalities of starting and running a practice, and will offer advice for today’s young design and construction professionals.

To kick off our third-annual Under 40 Leadership Summit, October 9-11 in San Francisco, BD+C's Editorial Director Robert Cassidy will moderate a Q&A session with M. Arthur Gensler, Jr., FAIA, FIIDA, RIBA, founder of the world’s largest architecture firm. 

Gensler and Cassidy will talk about the role of the architect in society, the impact of great design, and the practicalities of starting and running a practice, and will offer advice for today’s young design and construction professionals. U40 Summit attendees will be encouraged to ask questions and participate in the discussion.

The event, which brings together current and past 40 Under 40 winners and other young AEC leaders, is taking place at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco. Other highlights of the U40 Leadership Summit are:
• $5,000 Vision U40 competition. Summit attendees will collaborate in small teams to develop innovative solutions to today's pressing social, economic, technical and cultural problems related to the built environment. • U40 Marshmallow Challenge (networking and team building, with prizes to the winners)
• Tours of Autodesk Gallery and Mission Bay/UCSF Science + Technology Mixed Use District

Prism-shaped design unveiled for five-star hotel in Saudi Arabia

Goettsch Partners has been commissioned by Saudi Oger Ltd. to design a new five-star, 214-key business hotel in the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. As a design-build assignment, Saudi Oger is serving as the contractor, selected by developer Rayadah Investment Company. The project is sited on Parcel 1.08, one of the first 10 parcels currently under development in the massive new master-planned district.

The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) announced that the organization will cease to license and support MasterFormat 95 as of December 31, 2009. The CSI Board of Directors voted to stop licensing and supporting MasterFormat 95 during its June 16, 2009, meeting at the CSI Annual Convention in Indianapolis.

Gensler among eight teams named finalists in 'classroom of the future' design competition

Eight teams were recognized today as finalists of the 2009 Open Architecture Challenge: Classroom. Finalists submitted designs ranging from an outdoor classroom for children in inner-city Chicago, learning spaces for the children of salt pan workers in India, safe spaces for youth in Bogota, Colombia and a bamboo classroom in the Himalayan mountains.
