VIA Metropolitan Transit’s Brooks City Base Transit Center recently opened on Sept. 14 in San Antonio. The facility is located on the site of the former Brooks Air Force Base, one of the first training facilities for the US Army Air Corps, dating back to 1917.

The 4,300-sf Smart Transit Hub, designed by KAI, incorporated the site’s historic military heritage into the design with a curved roof and columnar support system meant as an homage to World War I biplanes. The center includes eight bus bays located on a transit island and new bus lanes that enter from South New Braunfels and Sidney Brooks and loop around the transit island.

Center amenities include interior seating for 50, covered exterior seating for 30, public restrooms, ticket vending windows, roof solar panels, and active next bus displays. To the south is parking for approximately 40 patron vehicles.
