Healthcare project will merge outpatient clinic with YMCA to promote wellness and prevention

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region announce collaboration, along with developer The Boldt Company, to create next-generation wellness facility.

By The Boldt Company | September 17, 2013

What if healthcare focused on keeping people healthy instead of waiting to treat people until they are sick? According to Penrose St. Francis Health Services and the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region, that change would mean lower healthcare costs, more convenient care and most importantly, a healthier community. Because of that, those two organizations, along with developer The Boldt Company, have teamed to begin work on the Tri-Lakes Community Health Village in Monument, Colo.

The Tri-Lakes Community Health Village will include a 50,000-sq.-ft. outpatient facility that will be directly attached to the Tri-Lakes YMCA, which is the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region’s newest location. In addition to the existing services offered at the YMCA Family Center, the Tri-Lakes Community Health Village will include Urgent Care, Primary Care, Rehab, Occupational Medicine, Imaging, a whole host of specialty services, comprehensive wellness services, and a market place in order to keep people healthy and improve their overall quality of life.

“We’re extremely excited to partner with the YMCA to create the next generation of healthcare delivery in the Tri-Lakes area that focuses beyond the walls of our hospitals,” said Margaret Sabin, president and CEO of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, which is part of Centura Health, the region’s leading health care network. “Our innovative health neighborhoods approach is a total solution for consumers, providing optimal healthcare value while setting a new standard of care that Coloradans will come to expect.”

The health village’s model aims to deliver better care by focusing on wellness and prevention to keep people healthy, utilizing evidence-based medicine and best practices and increasing convenience through multiple access points—all within a friendly service environment.

“At the Y, we nurture the potential of children, empower people to lead fuller lives and develop innovative and community-based solutions that unite people from all walks of life to participate in and work for positive social change,” said Dan Dummermuth, president and CEO of the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region. “The community health village concept and collaboration with Penrose-St. Francis Health Services will strongly deliver on each of our focus areas—youth development, healthy living and social responsibility—and positively impact the Tri-Lakes community with preventive care services.”

The Boldt Company will serve as the owner / developer of the 50,000-sq.-ft. outpatient facility and the new shared lobby.  Boldt is not only the developer but also the facilitator of the project and has opened up communication with the YMCA and brought both Penrose and the YMCA to the table in order to get the project off the ground.

“Boldt is extremely excited to be able to partner with such forward thinkers as Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and The YMCA of the Pikes Peaks Region to bring this innovative project to the community. Our partners are writing a new chapter as healthcare transitions from sick care to preventive care, and it is leadership like this that really makes the project fun to be a part of.” said Jake Garro, of The Boldt Company - Development Group.

The health village will feature health information technology and appropriately-trained staff such as health navigators to guide users through the system and customize each person’s needs across a full spectrum of available services. This approach enhances a healthcare provider’s ability to follow patients across the healthcare continuum and treat the whole person, rather than just a medical condition.

This neighborhood approach also encourages people to take care of themselves on a continual basis; the health village will make it easy and convenient to get important checkups and screenings, thereby increasing the chances of early detection and mitigation of significant health issues.

“Our long term vision is to toss out the old convention of only going to the doctor when sick and dealing with the sometimes massive and expensive bureaucracy that comes with hospitals and medical hand-offs,” said Sabin. “It may sound counter intuitive, but as a true healthcare system our goal is to keep people healthy and out of hospitals, utilizing them most appropriately for those life events that require the scale and proportions a hospital can provide—and we are supporting that goal by investing in programs and services such as the community health village to keep people healthy.”

The Tri-Lakes Community Health Village will be located between I-25 and Jackson Parkway in Monument, CO. Construction of the facility is expected to be completed by fall of 2014.
