Accelerate Live! talk: Incubating innovation through R&D and product development, Jonatan Schumacher, Thornton Tomasetti

June 13, 2017

Over the course of the past decade, Thornton Tomasetti has morphed from a firm based on traditional engineering practices, to one centered on innovation through R&D and product development.

As Director of the firm’s virtual incubator, CORE Studio, Jonatan Schumacher has helped to spearhead this companywide movement toward innovation.

The firm’s inventions range from novel scripts and design tools to its custom TTX database that provides real-time collaboration across a multitude of software tools.

In this 15-minute talk at BD+C’s Accelerate Live! conference (May 11, 2017, Chicago), Schumacher presents the firm’s business model for developing, incubating, and delivering cutting-edge tools and solutions for the firm, and the greater AEC market.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

As Director of CORE studio, Jonatan Schumacher oversees and implements strategic development related to integrated structural design, façade design and building information modeling. He works closely with the building structure, building skin, and building performance practices, assisting project teams firm wide. His experience encompasses architecture, engineering, product design, robotics, and computer science. His areas of expertise include digital fabrication, automatic and generative geometry, computational analysis, and building information modeling. He is fluent in more than five scripting languages and has expertise in various parametric modeling platforms, as well as data mining, problem modeling, and knowledge exchange through APIs of Revit, Tekla, CATIA/Digital Project, Rhino and Grasshopper. Schumacher lectures at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J., and at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y.
