Accelerate Live! talk: The future of computational design, Ben Juckes, Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign

June 13, 2017

Since joining the Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign three years ago, Ben Juckes has worked on a wide range of typologies, from an award-winning hybrid student "maker space" and housing building at the University of Utah to cultural projects in Los Angeles and Jerusalem.

He is instrumental in developing a variety of DIY tools and custom workflows that challenge conventional practice and change the way we think about architecture.

In this 15-minute talk at BD+C’s Accelerate Live! conference (May 11, 2017, Chicago), Juckes discusses Yazdani’s tech-centric culture, where scripting has become an every-project occurrence and, as a consequence, each designer regularly works with computational tools as part of their basic toolset.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Ben Juckes is an Associate with the Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign, a Los Angeles based interdisciplinary architecture and design practice which is a laboratory for exploration and experimentation. Before relocating to California, Ben taught parametric modeling and design studios at the University of Western Australia where he also received his Master Degree from the School of Architecture. Whilst at UWA, Ben represented Australia at the Venice Biennale, collaborating with Felix on a retrospective pavilion that brought unbuilt projects to life through a series of augmentations and animations.  Since joining the Yazdani Studio he has worked on a wide range of typologies, from the award winning hybrid student "maker space" and housing building - Lassonde Studios at the University of Utah, to cultural projects in Los Angeles and Jerusalem, and significant high end residential developments in Dubai. Ben is embedded in and provides design leadership in both the studios research initiatives and active projects, and is instrumental in developing a variety of DIY tools and custom workflows that challenge conventional practice and change the way we think about architecture.
