University of North Texas scores nation’s first LEED Platinum for a stadium

By Leslie Streicher, Associate Editor | December 9, 2011

Apogee Stadium at the University of North Texas has received LEED Platinum from the U.S. Green Building Council, the first such certification of its kind. HKS Sports and Entertainment Group designed the complex, which was built by Manhattan Construction Company and the UNT System. More than 50% of the stadium site was preserved or restored with landscaping native to the area, while three wind turbines will provide about half a million kilowatt hours per year, eliminating 323 metric tons of carbon dioxide. The 31,000-seat stadium houses luxury suites, club-level amenities, a school-spirit store, corporate deck, and special end-zone seating. Low-flow plumbing fixtures and low-VOC-emitting materials also helped the building achieve its rating.
