Thornton Tomasetti joins Pelli and Hines on $1B Transbay Transit Center

The Los Angeles and New York offices of structural engineer Thornton Tomasetti will join the team of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects of New Haven, Conn., and Houston-based Hines in the design and development of the new Transbay Transit Center in San Francisco. The transit center will centralize nine of the region's transportation systems under one roof: AC Transit, Caltrain, MUNI, Golden Gate Transit, SamTrans, Greyhound, BART, WestCAT, and future California High-Speed Rail.

The 40 acres surrounding the Transit Center will be developed with housing, retail, and an adjacent tower. The design team has proposed transforming the roof of the Transit Center into a 5.4-acre public park. Construction on a temporary transit facility at Fremont and Folsom Streets is set to be completed in 2009, to be followed by the demolition of the existing Transbay Terminal.

The new development, estimated to cost up to $1 billion, is scheduled for completion in 2014.
