Hollywood — home to the American film industry, the Walk of Fame, and the iconic Hollywood Sign —has welcomed a new kind of attraction. Among the neighborhood’s eclectic landmarks, the Tesla© Diner stands out as a destination that merges technology, entertainment, and hospitality into a single experience.
Designed by local architectural firm Stantec, the Tesla© Diner is a retro-futuristic charging hub in the heart of Hollywood, California. The Tesla© Diner redefines what a roadside stop can be. Designed as an immersive destination, it brings together electric vehicle charging, dining, and entertainment in one striking environment. With more than 250 dining seats and 80 Supercharger stalls, the space operates at the intersection of high traffic and high occupancy — creating a unique set of design and safety challenges. Since opening in the summer of 2025, the diner has drawn significant crowds, with wait times stretching for hours as visitors come not only to charge, but to experience the space itself.
Meeting the Challenge: Safety Without Compromise
Behind its eye-catching design lies a critical challenge: ensuring life safety in a space where vehicles and occupied areas coexist in close proximity. To meet stringent fire and life safety requirements without compromising the architectural vision, the project team turned to fire rated glass – a proven, high-performance solution that brings together safety, clarity, and design freedom.
SAFTI FIRST® provided the USA-made, high performance fire rated glass and framing system that delivered both needed protection and design flexibility. In a dynamic environment where vehicles, charging stations, and dining spaces converge, maintaining safe fire separation is critical to prevent flashover fires in adjacent buildings caused by extreme radiant heat and flames.
By incorporating SuperClear® 45-HS with Solarban® 60 in GPX® Architectural Series Framing and SuperLite® II-XLB 60 with Solarban 60® in GPX® Architectural Series Framing, the systems provided 45- and 60-minute fire ratings while maintaining transparency and visual continuity. Golden State Glazing executed the installation with a high level of precision, aligning the systems seamlessly with the project’s complex architectural vision.
Rather than relying on heavy, opaque barriers, the fire rated glazing enables clear sightlines across the diner — from active charging zones at the street level to rooftop dining areas above. This transparency enhances both occupant safety and the overall guest experience while supporting wayfinding.
Performance Beyond Fire Protection
In addition to life safety, SAFTI FIRST® systems contribute to the building’s overall performance. The integration of Solarban® 60 low-e coatings reduces solar heat gain while maintaining high visible light transmission, resulting in a bright, comfortable interior environment. By combining fire resistance with energy efficiency and daylighting, the glazing system serves multiple roles within the building envelope — minimizing the need for additional materials while supporting broader sustainability and performance goals.
Seamless Design Integration
One of the most distinctive aspects of the project is how seamlessly the fire rated systems integrate with adjacent non-rated glazing. SAFTI FIRST® engineered a custom segmented wall system that aligns both systems with consistent sightlines, making them virtually indistinguishable.
While the diner incorporates curved non-rated glazing, the segmented fire rated system replicates this visual effect — maintaining a smooth, continuous aesthetic without compromising safety. This approach preserves the architect’s retro-futuristic vision while meeting strict code requirements.
A New Standard for Fire Rated Design
This project demonstrates how SAFTI FIRST® solutions go beyond traditional fire rated applications —transforming them into a design asset rather than a limitation. Key benefits include:
- Light-filled spaces with built-in fire protection
- Clear visibility for enhanced safety, wayfinding, and user experience
- Integrated performance combining fire resistance, energy efficiency, and daylighting
- Seamless continuity with adjacent non-rated systems
The Result
The Tesla© Diner is a compelling example of how innovation and safety can coexist. Through advanced fire rated glazing technology, SAFTI FIRST® helped enable a bold architectural vision — proving that high-performance fire protection can enhance, rather than constrain, modern design.
Whether arriving to charge, dine, or simply take in the experience, visitors encounter a space that is as safe as it is striking — a true reflection of what’s possible when design ambition meets engineered performance.
