Employing an array of electricity-generating solar reflectors as well as geothermal technology for heating and cooling, the 12,000-sf Welcome Center at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., will be completely off the grid. Designed by New York-based Murphy Burnham & Buttrick, the facility will include a series of exhibition spaces, offices for admissions staff, and multipurpose spaces for tour groups and universitywide receptions and events. The building's long, narrow form will capitalize on daylight and views and will help the modest structure tie in with the larger athletic buildings nearby. Completion: fall 2009.
