Top 10 Trending Cities for Renters in 2026

Here are the top ten trending cities to watch ahead of the 2026 rental season.

1. Cincinnati, Ohio

Page views increased by 3%, listings added to favorites grew by 81%, and saved searches jumped by 14% for Cincinnati.

"The city has claimed the #1 spot on our list, signaling its status as the most popular destination for renters at the start of the year after jumping 10 positions since last year," writes Adina Dragos, real estate writer and research analyst with RentCafe.

2. Atlanta, Ga.

Atlanta ranks sixth for total page views, while saved searches edged up 1% compared to last year, and it placed second overall for listings added to favorites.

"Even as inventory tightens, engagement levels suggest that people remain determined to find a place in the city," writes Dragos.

3. Minneapolis, Minn.

Minneapolis ranks ninth for total page views, fifth for saved searches, and saw listings added to favorites grow by 29 percent.

"Renters in Minneapolis are becoming more intentional in their searches, by spending less time browsing and more time narrowing their choices," writes Dragos.

4. Washington, D.C.

Ranking second for saved apartments, Washington, D.C., saw listings added to favorites decline by 2% compared to last year, and the city ranked sixth based on apartment views.

"While online activity eased slightly, interest in specific listings has remained steady, suggesting that renters are taking time to explore the expanded range of choices," writes Dragos.

5. Baltimore, Md.

Baltimore page views increased by 73%, listings added to favorites grew by 65%, and saved searches remained steady.

"Baltimore’s rental market is experiencing a strong wave of engagement with renters not only viewing more listings, but also showing greater commitment to specific ones," writes Dragos.

6. Cleveland, Ohio

Page views remained relatively steady compared to last year, listings added to favorites grew by 11%, and saved searches fell by 4% in Cleveland.

"Renters appear more decisive this year, focusing their attention on specific listings, rather than exploring widely," writes Dragos.

7. San Jose, Calif.

San Jose ranks 17th for total saved searches, with page views increasing by 29% and listings added to favorites growing by 2 percent.

"As renters compete in a tightening supply market, many are acting faster and revisiting listings more often. This propelled the city upward by 80 positions and made it the standout market in the West," writes Dragos.

8. Philadelphia, Pa.

Listings added to favorites grew by 33%, page views increased by 4%, and saved searches jumped by 3% in Philadelphia.

"While prospective renters continue to show high interest, competition in nearby markets appears to be slightly shifting attention elsewhere, which explains Philadelphia’s three-spot drop," writes Dragos.

9. Kansas City, Mo.

Kansas City page views increased by 3%, saved searches jumped by 27%, and listings added to favorites grew by 26 percent.

"Kansas City’s renters are becoming more deliberate with rising numbers of saves and focused searches for listings that meet specific criteria, which suggests growing confidence in the local market’s value," writes Dragos.

10. Birmingham, Ala.

The city ranks fourth for total page views, listings added to favorites grew by 11%, and saved searches jumped by 10 percent.

"Renters here have shown heightened engagement by saving more listings and returning frequently as they refine their searches," writes Dragos.
