Roofers critical of new OSHA harness rules

Oct. 6, 2011

Roofers say a new OSHA rule requiring all residential roofers to wear a safety harness makes workers less safe, and is causing lost business for those who comply with the rule. The rules are fueling a competition between those contractors who are following them and passing on the costs to their clients, and those who are skirting the rules and scooping up business with lower bids. Companies that comply with the rules say that workers’ harness lines can get tangled, causing an unsafe situation, and that preventing tangles slows productivity.
