HKS Architects, Inc., a top-five national architectural/engineering firm, merged with The Stein-Cox Group, a Phoenix, Ariz.-based healthcare design firm.

The merger allows HKS to leverage its specialty healthcare design experience nationally with the 20-year local firm.  The new office also provides opportunity for expansion into other Arizona market sectors including commercial, hospitality, and sports.

The Stein-Cox Group is an  20-person practice, founded by Mo Stein and Jeff Cox in 1987.  Since its inception, the firm has completed more than $2 billion in construction throughout Arizona including work at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Arizona Heart Institute and Hospital, Sun Health, Banner Health System, and Catholic Healthcare West.

“HKS has had the privilege of working with The Stein-Cox Group for over 25 years within the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health as well as projects including the Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital expansion and Phoenix Baptist Hospital and Medical Center Ambulatory Care Center,” said H. Ralph Hawkins, FAIA, FACHA, president and CEO, HKS, Inc.

Both firms have been ranked in the top 100 healthcare design firms, according to Modern Healthcare magazine.  HKS has been ranked number one in volume of healthcare architecture for 14 consecutive years.  The firm is also the largest healthcare architect internationally, according to BD World Architecture.

Under the direction of Stein, the office will continue to provide a broad range of professional services to clients throughout Arizona including programming, master planning, space planning, interior design, architectural design, construction documents, and construction administration.  Additional services available to clients, through the merger, will include structural design, medical planning, and environmental graphic design.

“The Stein-Cox Group brings local experience and a distinct knowledge of the area,” said Hawkins.  “The firm's outstanding staff and extensive portfolio of work provide a solid foundation to continue to grow and diversify.  HKS offers Phoenix clients a local presence combined with national resources.  Our project management, financial management, legal department, quality assurance, and overall administration will continue the firm’s distinguished level of service.”

“We are excited about joining forces with the international firm of HKS,” said Stein.  “Our goal is to make The Stein-Cox Group merger seamless to our current clients.  Architectural services will continue to be provided through the staff in Phoenix – with access to HKS’s national staff resources.”
