The Dalí Museum in Florida to undergo a $65 million, 35,000-sf expansion project
In St. Petersburg, Fla., The Dalí Museum will undergo a $65 million, 35,000-sf expansion project, with groundbreaking expected this fall.
The Dalí, which opened in 1982 and debuted its current building in 2011, houses over 2,400 works from every period and medium of Salvador Dalí’s creative life.
The Beck Group, which constructed The Dalí’s 2011 building, will design and build the expansion. Yaa Weymouth of PBK, architect of the museum’s original building, will help ensure design continuity.
The project features a facade that takes inspiration from Dalí’s works.
“The exterior design … extends and reinterprets the existing building, using familiar materials in new ways to create moments of discovery,” Trevor Lamphier, design principal at The Beck Group, said in a statement. “Like Dalí’s work, the architecture invites a double take, rewarding curiosity and encouraging visitors to slow down and look again.”
The expansion will be built on the south side of the museum, between the existing building and Dalí Boulevard, with a small portion extending to the west side. Inspired by growing interest in innovative art experiences, the expansion will include the following:
- Flexible gallery spaces designed for immersive experiences that blend art and technology
- A dedicated learning center for K-12 student programs and adult education
- Community event spaces to support programs, gatherings, and cultural activities.
The additions will complement the museum’s existing permanent collection galleries, special exhibition spaces, theater, cafe, and garden.
The Dalí plans to open the expanded spaces in September 2028 and will remain open throughout construction.
On the building team: The Dalí Museum (owner), Beck Architecture and PBK Architects (design architects), Beck Architecture (architect of record), Walter P Moore (structural engineer), Buro Happold (MEPFPIT engineer and lighting designer), Kimley-Horn (civil engineer and landscape architect), The Beck Group (general contractor).
