Architects want more influence in how building products are upgraded and enhanced
Architects are eager for greater influence in building product innovation, according to the Architect’s Journey to Specification report, published by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), in collaboration with Deltek and ConstructConnect.
Some 73% of architects highly value being involved in product development with manufacturers. But only 24% would like to participate directly in these efforts.
Only 31% of architects are early adopters of sustainable solutions, a figure unchanged since 2020. Notably, 57% of these early adopters also embrace new technology.
The share of architects that proactively recommend or integrate sustainability options grew from 58% in 2020 to 79% in 2025. Roughly 72% of architects prefer U.S.-manufactured products, citing energy performance, durability, occupant health, and supply chain stability as key factors.
