HMC Architects releases guidebook on trauma-informed design
HMC Architects has released Architecture for Healing: Trauma-Informed Design, a new guidebook developed in partnership with Bassetti Architects, a design studio of HMC. The publication examines how the built environment can reduce stress, foster safety, and support emotional well-being through intentional, human-centered design.
Rooted in empathy, neuroscience, and real-world application, Architecture for Healing translates trauma-informed principles into practical design strategies for healthcare, educational, and civic environments. Drawing on years of project experience and interdisciplinary collaboration, the guidebook demonstrates how architecture can respond more thoughtfully to the needs of people navigating stress, trauma, and vulnerability.
“Architecture has a responsibility beyond function and form,” said Brian Staton, CEO of HMC Architects. “Architecture for Healing reflects our belief that design can actively support dignity, safety, and well-being—especially for those navigating stress or trauma. This guidebook is about translating empathy into action and giving designers and clients practical tools to create spaces that truly serve people.”
“What if architecture could ease pain?” the guidebook asks—challenging designers, owners, and communities to consider how space influences emotional and physical experience. Through accessible frameworks, design principles, and case studies, Architecture for Healing illustrates how thoughtful design decisions can create environments that promote calm, trust, and resilience while maintaining performance and functionality.
The publication reflects a shared commitment between HMC Architects and Bassetti Architects to evidence-based, people-centered design. HMC acquired Bassetti Architects in April 2025, expanding the firm’s expertise and deepening its focus on design approaches that prioritize well-being, equity, and community impact across sectors.
