  • The Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, Calif., will get a rejuvenation with the construction of a 542,000-sf office office campus. Designed by Nadel Architects, Los Angeles, the Systems Acquisition Management and Support Complex will include a secure communications facility, courtroom, officer's club, conference center, childcare facility, and offices. Snyder Lanston of Irvine, Calif., will build the $77.5 million complex. Completion is scheduled for early 2006.

  • A network of three major Toronto-based hospitals, called the University Health Network, has broken ground on a 10-story, 250,000-sf medical research lab as part of a proposed 1.2 million-sf medical and related sciences center in Toronto. The lab, which will be constructed in an existing tower, will include space for nuclear magnetic resonance, robotics, and engineering. A joint venture that includes New York-based construction manager AMEC, M/E contractor Black and McDonald, Toronto, and contractor EllisDon Corp., Mississauga, Ontario, won the $70 million design-build contract, which includes a five-year facility management deal. Completion is scheduled for Aug. 2005.

  • Chicago-based mall developer General Growth Properties has received city approval to break ground on a million-sf open-air lifestyle center in Maumee, Ohio. Designed by KA Architecture, Cleveland, the Shops at Fallen Timbers will mimic a Midwest main street, with pedestrian-friendly shops and quaint, old-style storefronts. The 130-acre mall will feature restaurants, retail, and a 20-screen movie theater surrounded by dense landscape to shelter views of perimeter parking lots. It's part of a 450-acre mixed-use development that will also include an office park, single-family residential, and additional retail. The project is schedule to open in spring of 2006.
