The Physical, Earth & Environmental Science Center under construction at Occidental College in Los Angeles will house 23 research and teaching laboratories as well as faculty offices. Anshen + Allen, Los Angeles is architect for the $16 million facility. Matt Construction of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., is general contractor for the 41,000-sq.-ft. building, which is scheduled for completion in October.

The public will be able to see into the press hall to watch newspapers being printed when the Kansas City Star's $199 million production facility in downtown Kansas City, Mo., opens in early 2006. The Austin Co., Cleveland, will design, engineer, and construct the 424,000-sq.-ft. facility.

Construction has begun on the five-building Deer Valley High School No. 5 in North Phoenix, Ariz. The design, by DLR Group, Omaha, Neb., includes two academic buildings that will subdivide the student population into eight smaller learning groups. W.E. O'Neil Construction Co. of Arizona, in association with Abacus Project Management, was awarded a construction manager-at-risk contract for the project.

Arlington Gateway is a 1.25 million-sq.-ft. mixed-use development taking shape in the Ballston area of Arlington, Va. The architect is WDG Architecture, Washington, D.C. Construction began early this year on a 12-story office building and is also under way on a 21-story residential building. Bethesda, Md.-based Clark Construction Group is general contractor for both buildings. A full-service hotel is also planned for Arlington Gateway.
