In his design for the Japanese American Museum in Los Angeles, Gyo Obata-design principal of Hellmuth Obata & Kassabaum, St. Louis-specified four different thicknesses of monolithic and laminated glass for the curtain wall. The designer found a single system that offered multiple glass-pocket reducers to accommodate very small glass thickness changes. Other custom elements of the exterior system include horizontals that anchor to pipe columns, eliminating intermediate vertical mullions to create a more dramatic visual effect.
Cost control was key for the building team. The glazing contractor could keep the installed price of the system low in part by using different factory-applied finishes on the exterior and interior surfaces of the curtain wall.
