The South Carolina Research Authority, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the City of Charleston, S.C., are teaming to convert a Charleston historic landmark building into a research and laboratory facility for biomedical research start-ups. The facility will also contain a small police substation and administrative offices. Choate Construction Co., Atlanta, will oversee the adaptive reuse of the 28,000-sf, 112-year-old building, which is part of a larger development plan to revitalize a neglected section of Charleston by creating a biomedical research hub, public amenities, new homes, and stores. Completion: winter 2009.
