Translucent walls

Aug. 11, 2010

In renovating its landmark Exchange Street Parking Garage, the University of Akron (Ohio) wanted a design that reflected the campus's "new look." Architect Braun & Steidl designed four translucent towers to add a vertical cladding counterpoint to the horizontal lines of the 365,000-sq.-ft., five-level structure. The system features heat-reflecting, 16-mm-thick polycarbonate that disperses diffused daylight, then glows at night with backlit illumination.
