Elements of an 'Allergy Resistant' Hotel Room

  • Floor—Hardwood floor with a cork underlay and water-based stain.

  • Wall covering—Breathable, non-vinyl wallpaper; VOC-free paint; natural-based adhesives.

  • Window treatment—Side-panel draperies and valences designed with EPA-approved materials. Wood shutters minimize accumulation of dust.

  • Furniture—No pressboard or particle board. All furniture is stained with VOC-free stain and comes with factory-sealed edges; natural-based adhesives.

  • Bathrooms—Caulking and tile adhesive is VOC-free. Showerheads are chlorine/chemical-free.

  • Cleaning products—All cleaning supplies, including tub and tile cleaner, glass cleaner, furniture polish, and multipurpose cleaner, are free of fragrances and chemicals.

  • Amenities—Shampoo, conditioners, lotions, facial soaps, and body cleansers are free of fragrances and chemicals.

  • Maintenance—Maintenance schedule for staff includes details on which products should be used, how bedding should be laundered, and how rooms will be maintained.

  • Bedding—Natural cotton products washed with special detergents in hot water only.

  • Miscellaneous—Heavy-use surfaces, such as door knobs, toilet flush levers, and towel racks, are factory-coated with an antimicrobial agent.
