Community learning center to showcase green design
The Frontier Project, a 14,000-sf community learning center designed by HMC Architects, Ontario, Calif., will serve as a demonstration site for sustainable design and construction. The $14 million facility will have an outer shell composed of insulating concrete forms, a north-facing glass wall for daylighting, an accessible green roof, photovoltaic panels, water-saving bathroom fixtures, and a “cool tower” and solar chimneys that use convection to heat and cool the building. Turner Construction is building the facility, which is expected to be completed in summer 2009.
