Eye-popping façade highlights renovation, addition at Chaffin Junior High School

Chaffin Junior High in Fort Smith, Ark., was built in 1969 with 86,000 sf. Despite additions of 7,500 and 15,000 sf in 1979 and 1990, the school was too small for the growing student population and its needs. The new $8 million renovation completed last year added 37,000 sf and renovated another 14,000 sf, while modernizing the facility. The project added seven new classrooms, a state-of-the-art media center, new dressing rooms, and a band and choir space, while remodeling and expanding the cafeteria and main office to accommodate a larger student body.

The new distinctive main entrance accentuates the public face of the school with an aluminum tube “baguette” system by Equus Metals, Inc., finished with Valspar's Fluropon in Dark Green, Gold Watch, Harvest Gold, Seawolf, and Coronado Red—a highly durable product designed for any exterior component of aluminum, Galvalume, and HDG steel.

The bright and playful metal façade provides a fresh look to this growing school. The brick exterior was transformed using Valspar coatings that match the school colors: Hunter Green and Vegas Gold. The metal wall panel system was manufactured by Citadel Architectural Products and was finished with shades of green, including Dark Ivy, Grandview, Spearmint, and Kendall Green.

Valspar was honored with an award last month by the Metal Construction Association for its contribution to the school's vibrant addition and renovation.
