Australia’s first net zero office building features distinctive pixelated façade

Australia's first carbon neutral office building, featuring a distinctive pixelated façade, recently opened in Melbourne. Designed by Studio 505 Architects, the $6 million, four-floor building was designed to generate more energy than it consumes, and features notable green features such as an non-ozone-depleting absorption heat pump chiller, a grass roof covering, and a reed-bed planter system to filter grey water and shade windows. The pixelated shade screen facade, double glazed windows, daylighting, and natural ventilation minimize the need for energy.
Meanwhile, solar panels and vertical axis wind turbines on the roof generate enough energy to offset the building’s electricity use. Workstations within the office will be individually controlled to circulate fresh air through a raised roof, and concrete ceiling slabs will provide radiant cooling. The structure scored a perfect 105 points on the Australia's Green Star rating system.
