New York’s iconic Macy’s flagship store to get $400 million renovation

Work will begin early next year and continue through 2015. Plans call for an addition of 100,000 sf of selling space. Currently at 2.2 million sf, the structure has half of that space devoted to selling, and the other half used for offices, storerooms, and administration. The store’s last significant renovation was in the 1970s. The store will remain open during construction. Macy’s expects to add 800 new positions to the store’s existing staff as a result of the expansion. Built by Macy’s in 1931, the store will offer interactive product directories and streaming videos after the project wraps up. BD+C
