Vent system adds flood protection to medical research center in S.C.

Nov. 12, 2012

The new James E. Clyburn Research Center at the Medical University of South Carolina incorporates foundation flood vent systems from Smart Vent to fill flood protection and air ventilation needs. Selected by Stevens & Wilkinson Architects, the certified vents allowed the Building Team to elevate the first floor of the center, located in a flood zone, above base flood elevation on a crawl space. With a crawl space, access to utility lines and maintenance could be performed from under the building, rather than inside. The flood vent system enabled the Building Team to meet the functional requirements of the crawl space.
